make the following suggestions:

In order to instill
these United States.

a high degree of patriotism in the youth of our country, it is
Designate the month of April 1972 as clean-up month and solicit each citizen to pick up
one receptacle of litter. This encouragement for a clean Tidewater area could impress upon
each of us to refrain from littering.

Release a public notice setting forth the cost per person, on an annual basis, to collec
litter and trash. Possibly this would impress upon the citizens the staggering cost, in
tax dollars, of litter and trash collection."
72-65 - The following letter received from Mrs. Erdine Doughtie, 105 Sequoia Road, was
read:

"As a person believing in reality, I know that Portsmouth will never have free bus
service. Jr. High and. High School has been transported by public transporta$ion as long as
I can remember, and will continue, I'm sure.

However, is it too much to ask that the service for which we pay be a good service, a
promFt service, and a safe service?

I'm sure every member of Council is aware of the late buses daily
daily.

a record is kept

My child received a detention notice for being late %o homeroom 3 times in one week.
Her report card was marked tardy 5 times for one six weeks period. I have received calls
from shcool to see why she was absent when she was at school, but her name was not removed
from the absentee list when she came in on the late bus. In keeping a record for nine days,
I found that six days the bus did not arrive at school until after 10 o'clock, three days
the earliest arrival was 5 'til 10. Although, I find it unbelievable, one day the bus ran
out of gas. Wednesday, the bus didn't come to pick up in the afternoon, nor was one sent in
its place.

I have called Community Motor Bus Company and I find them unconcerned and rude. They
use a system to pacify called ~Passing the Buck' they blame the driver. In my opinion
most of these drivers deserve medals. The equipment they're given to drive is subject to all
kinds of break down, their buses are overcrouwded and the staggered time schedule ~s atrocious.
Now if this isn't true, what right does the company ha~e to employ such incompetent people
to drive our children? And City Council allowing it to be?

Members of Council know all the problems concerning busing.

My questions are:

What are you doing about it?
What are you going to do about it?
Why go our children have to be the ones to bear the burden of this foolish situation~"

On motion of Mr. Holley, and seconded by-.Mr. Johnson, to be received as information,
a copy of letter be sent to ~e grievance committee and a copy to Community Motor Bus Company~
