July 25~ 1972 <br /> <br /> 72-316 - Motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Smith, the following resolution was <br />adopted, and aycopy ~ei§en~ to ~the City of Chesapeake and State Highway Department, was <br />adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE STATE ~IGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE FUNDS FOR <br />THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE HODGES FERRY BRIDGE. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Hodges Ferry Bridge which traverses the <br />River connect~ing the cities of Chesapeake and Portsmouth <br />condition to take care of current traffic loads; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the <br />of Portsmouth <br />and <br /> <br />Western Branch of the Elizabeth <br />is inadequate in its present <br /> <br /> Hodges Ferry Bridge is a vital transportation link to the citizens <br />in both their travels to Chesapeake and to the Churchland area of Portsmouth; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the.proposed extension of Tyre Neck Road from Bruce Road <br />Boulevard will further encourage citizens of Portsmouth and Chesapeake <br />Ferry Bridge; and <br /> <br />to Portsmouth <br />to use the Hodges <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, either the improvement or replacement of said bridge would contribute <br />greatly to the safety and convenience of the citizens of Portsmouth. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />that it requests that the State Highway Department make available funds for the improvement <br />or replacement of the Hodges Ferry Bridge. -~ <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED bythe Council of <br />if such bridge is to be reconstructed that it <br /> <br />the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that <br />be replaced with a modern high level span." <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 72-216 The following ordinance deferred from City Council meeting of June 27, 1972, <br />was taken up and read: <br /> <br />"ZONING AMENDMENT ORDINANCE Z 72-21" <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Smith, the ordinance was adopted, and by <br />the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 72-216 The following ordinance deferred from City Council meeting of June 27, 1972 <br />was taken up and read: ' <br /> <br />"ZONING AMENDMENT ORDINANCE Z 72-22" <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Smith, the ordinance was adopted, and by <br />the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br />72-312 - The following letter received from Director of Planning was read: <br /> <br /> "At its regular monthly public hearing on 18 July 1972, the City Planning Commission <br />adopted the following resolution: <br /> <br />'OLDE TOWNE CONSERVATION PROJECT, VA R-49, FUTURE LAND USE <br /> <br />Having been advised by the Office of City Planning that its staff <br />feels that municipal property within official boundaries of an <br />urban renewal project, as defined by action of City Council, could <br />and should in any redevelopment transaction be processed adminis- <br />tratively through the Pogtsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority, <br />the Portsmouth Planning Commission hereby resolves to accept this <br />staff recommendation and to pass same along to City Council for its <br />consideration.' " <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Johnson and seconded by Mr. Smith, to be received as information, was <br />adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Early, Holley, Johnson, King, Smith, Wentz, Barnes <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> <br />
