We <br /> are in receipt of a letter from the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project requesting <br />'payment of these funds. <br /> <br /> Ihave beenadvised that STOP provided the following services in the City during the <br />past year: <br /> <br />1. Child Development Centers <br /> <br />Neighborhood Facility 900 Elm Avenue <br />Zi~n~ Baptist Church 527 Green Street (85 pre-schoolers). <br />This program is similar to the kindergarten program. <br /> <br />2. Staffint <br /> <br />Of the S21 persons employed by'STOP, 67 are Portsmouth residents. They <br />assisted in the offering o£ about $668,000 in Federally-funded activities <br />to_Portsmouth. <br /> <br />Other Activities <br /> <br />Tidewater Legal Aid Society operates from the Portsmouth Neighborhood <br />Facility. A fUll-time la,er.and supportive staff registered approxi- <br />mately 1,O00 cases last year; STOP is a financial supporter ofthis <br />function along with the ~ni:ted'Co~mun~ties Fund and Model Cities. <br /> <br />The Tidewater Residential Support Center, located at 2107 Liberty <br />S~reet, Chesapeake, serves 35 young women, 5 are residents of <br />Portsmouth. This is a job training effort. <br /> <br />C~ <br /> <br />Neighborhood Services Component provides outreach capability - <br />to include recruitment and £ield assistance to area residents of <br /> <br />Manpower Component, which operates;as a job development; counseling, <br />and job placement group, ties in with the community'workers who perform <br />much of the recruitment. <br /> <br /> ~uring the past summer, 245 Portsmouth youth worked in STeP's Summer Neighborhood ~ <br />Youth Corps Program, These enrollees were assigned to a number o£ non-profit public agencieg <br />where they worked a maximum of ~6 hours a week. Also, during last summer, for a 9-week <br />period, approximately3,000 Portsmouth youngsters between the ages of 8 and 13 participated <br />in day camp programs, fishing .expeditions, swimming programs, baseball games, family cookouts <br />and cultural enrichment tours.~! <br /> <br /> On motion of MrJ/~ie~'and seconded by~lr.
