<br />TO THE PORTSMOUTH SUPPLEMENTAL RETIREMENT SYSTEM AND THE PORTSMOUTH FIRE AND
<br />POLICE RETIREMENT SYSTEM."

<br /> 77-343 - "Consideration of an ordinance changing a segment of Columbia Street extending
<br />eastward from Hamilton Avenue from Columbia Street to Power Street.
<br />
<br /> The Mount Hermon Civic League has requested that the small cul-de-sac portion of Columbia
<br />Street extending eastward from Hamilton Avenue and bordered by the VEPCO headquarters be renam
<br />Power Street. A copy of the letter from the Planning Commission endorsing the recommendation
<br />from the citizens of Mount Hermon is attached for your information. The City Manager recom-
<br />mends adoption."

<br /> On motinn of Mr. Barnes and seconded by Mr. Wentz, the following ordinance was adopted
<br />on first and final reading, and by the following vote:

<br /> "AN ORDINANCE CHANGING'THE NAME'OF THAT PORTION OF COLUMBIA STREET WHICH IS
<br /> A CUL-DE-SAC EXTENDING EASTWARD FROM HAMILTON AVENUE."

<br /> 77-344 "Consideration of an ordinance to change the name of two sections of Washington
<br />Street to 7th and 8th Streets.
<br />
<br /> This ordinance will change the name~of two vacant sections of Washington Street to por-
<br />tions of 7th and 8th Streets. This is necessary as a result of Urban Renewal and Community
<br />Development public improvements being constructed in the Southside and Effingham Redevelop-
<br />ment areas which have substantially changed the previously existing street patterns. This
<br />matter has been considered by the City Planning Commission and th6ir recommendation is pro-
<br />vided for your information and review. The City Manager recommends adoption."

<br /> On motion of Mr. Barnes and seconded by Mr. Holley, the following ordinance was adopted
<br />on first and final reading, and by the following vote:

<br />"AN ORDINANCE CHANGING THE NAME OF A PORTION OF WASHINGTON STREET NORTH FROM
<br />PALMER STREET TO THE INTERSECTION OF LINCOLN STREET AND SEVENTH STREET TO BE
<br />KNOWN AS EIGHTH STREET; CHANGING THE NAME OF A PORTION OF WASHINGTON STREET
<br />NORTH FROM LINCOLN STREET TO THE CRAWFORD CONNECTOR TO BE KNOWN AS SEVENTH
<br />STREET." ~

<br /> 77-345 "Consideration of a resolution requesting the Virginia Commission on Highways
<br />and Transportation to designate the segment of U. S. Route 58 from the Midtown Tunnel to High
<br />Street as the Martin LUther King Freeway.
<br />
<br /> The City adopted an ordinance on August 26, 1977, designating~t~i~portion of U. S. 58
<br />as the Martin Luther King Freeway. We have since been advised that Harbor Drive from the
<br />Midtown Tunnel to London Boulevard is owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia and will require
<br />approval of the State. Highway Commission in order to:rename it. The City Manager recommends
<br />adoption."

<br /> On motion of Mr. Holley and seconded by Mr. Elliott, the following resolution was
<br />adopted, and by the following vote:
<br />
<br />"A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORTATION
<br />COMMISSION TO DESIGNATE THAT SEGMENT OF U. S. ROUTE 58 FROM THE MIDTOWN TUNNEL
<br />TO HIGH STREET AS MARTIN LUTHER KING FREEWAY.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, this Council on April 26, 1972 ordained to change the name of that portion of
<br />U. S. Route S8 from the Midtown TUnne~l to High Street to Martin Luther King Freeway; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, said Freeway is a State highway and the name thereof is determined by the Virgi~
<br />Department of Highways an~ Transportation Commission.
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia,
<br />that it requests the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation Commission to desig-
<br />nate that segment of U. S. Route 58 from the Midto~m Tunnel to High Street as the Martin
<br />Luther King Freeway."

<br /> 77-546 - "Consideration of a resolution authorizing the City Manager to accept the bid
<br />of Taylor Brothers, Inc., for certain City-owned property.
<br />
<br /> An auction was held for this particular property, setting forth a minimum bid of $7,000.
<br />There was one bid for this amount and a second bid for $7,100 was offered. No further bids
<br />were received. Based on this it is my recommendation that the property be sold to Taylor
<br />Brothers, Inc., for the high bid of $7,100. The City Manager recommends adoption."
