Subdivision <br /> <br />D~ticle I. General <br /> <br />Section 32-1. Authority and purpose. <br /> <br /> This chapter is adopted'pursuant to the te_rm.s and pro- <br />visions of the CQde of Virginia, 1950, as amended. The purpose <br />of ~his chapter is to provide for the harmonious and economic <br />development of the City of Portsmouth; for the orderly sub- <br />division of land-ahd its development; for .the orderly develop- <br />ment of the general area surrounding such subdivision; for the <br />coordination of streets within such subdivision with other ex- <br />isting or planned streets within the general area; for adequate <br />provisions for drainage, flood control, light, air and other <br />public purposes; for the adequate and proper installation of <br />streets, drainage, sanitarysewers, water and other utilities <br />and facilities; for the dedication to the city of land for <br />streets, alleys or other public purposes or the transfer to <br />the city of easements or other richts or privileges; and for <br />~he reservatign for the city of land to be acquired for public <br />facilities. <br /> <br />Section 32-2. Definitions. <br /> <br /> The following words and phrases when used in this chapter <br />shall, for the purposes of this chapter, have the meanings re- <br />spectively ascribed to them in this ~ection except in those in- <br />stances where the context clearly indicates a different meaning: <br /> <br /> (a) Alley. A minor way designed to give vehicular access <br />to the ~ ~ <br /> s~de or r~ar of properties whose prlncipa!, frontage is on <br />another street. <br /> <br /> <br />
