AN ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT; <br />TO PROVIDE A COMPENSATION PLAN FOR EMPLOYEES; AND TO REGULATE <br />THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE 1975-1976 CLASSIFICATION AND PAY PLAN <br />OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br />Section 1. Employees classified. <br /> <br /> On and'after July 1, 1975, all employees of the City <br />of Portsmouth shall be classified according to the kind and <br />type of work performed by them and as provided in this ordinance. <br /> <br />Section 2. Classification and compensation. <br /> <br /> Ail full time officers and employees of the City, except <br />those mentioned in Section 15 of this ordinance, shall be class- <br />ified and graded ~n accordance with the "classes of positions <br />assigned to pay grades", portion of this ordinance. The com- <br />pensation of each employee shall be determined according to the <br />pay schedule and other provisions of this ordinance; such pay <br />schedule shall be effective for the first pay period in fiscal <br />year 1975-1976. <br /> <br />Section 3. Compensation plan for salaried employees. <br /> <br /> On ~nd after July 1, 1975, the following salary steps <br />for the respective positions as set forth in Section 2 of this <br />ordinance shall constitute the plan of compensation for all <br />persons classified under said section: (Sae pages 6 - 1t) <br /> <br />Section 4. New employees. <br /> <br /> Any person employed on and after Juiv 1, 1975, shall <br />receive compensation according to the classification in which <br />he is placed; except that persons employed on or after that <br />date and classified under Section 2 of this ordinance shall <br />be placed in the probation step for his grade for a period <br />of not less than six months nor more than twelve months, <br />but no person shall serve in a probation step for more than <br />twelve months. No employee may be hired at a rate above the <br />probation step in his class title without written approval of <br />the City Manager or his designee. <br /> <br /> <br />
