AN ORDINANCE DESIGNATING THE FOUR CORNERS OF HIGH AND COURT <br />STREETS AS THE TO?~ SQUARE HISTORIC DISTRICT. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, S 15.1-503.2 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as <br />amended, eiapowers the City of Portsmouth to set forth Historic <br />areas within the City in which there exists special public value <br />because of notable features relating to the culture of the com- <br />munity and which areas warrant conservation and preservation; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the four corners of High and Court Streets war- <br />rant such designation in that in 1752 Colonel William Crawford <br />designated the intersection of High Street and Court Street to <br />be for the administration of the county and town and for the <br />Church of England Civil Activities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the northwest corner became the County Court <br />House; the southwest corner became Trinity Church; the south- <br />west and northwest corners became the Town Administration Hall <br />and the Commerce Center respectively. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City <br />of Portsmouth, Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That the four corners of High and Court Streets are <br />designated a Historic District as described on a plat entitled <br />"City of Portsmouth, Virginia, Tov~ Square Historic District, <br />1752" prepared by the Office of City Planning, Portsmouth, Vir- <br />ginia, June, 1977. <br /> <br /> 2. This ordinance shall be effective from the date of its <br />adoption. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />at a meeting held June 28, 1977. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
