AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ~{E CODE OF THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIR- <br />GINIA, 1973, BY ADDING TO CHAPTER 6 THEREOFf ARTICLE IV~ SECTION <br />6-50, PERTAINING TO HOUSING FOR THE ELDERLY. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, that the Code of the CSty of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />1973, be amended by adding to Chapter 6 thereof Article IV, <br />Section 6-50, to read as follows~ <br /> <br />ARTICLE IV HOUSING FOR THE ELDERLY <br /> <br />Section 6-50. Additional requirements of Housing for <br /> the Elderly. <br /> <br /> Ail Housing for the Elderly, as defined, shall comply with <br />the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, as amended. In <br />addition, all housing designated as Housing for the Elderly, as <br />defined by Section 40-31 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, <br />shall comply with the following provisions: <br /> <br />An entrance walk with no steps or stepped <br />ramps shall be extended from a primary public <br />building entrance to another acceptable paved <br />way or to a vehicular unloading zone. <br /> <br />All ramps shall have a maximum slope of 1 in <br />12 except where total height of ramp does not <br />exceed 1 foot the maximum slope may be 1 in 10. <br />Slope of ramp shall be the same in all parts. <br />Change of direction shall be on level landings <br />with a minimum of 5' and the same widtk as the <br />ramp. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Sidewalks shall have a maximum grade of 5.0%. <br /> <br />Bathtubs shall be at least five feet long and <br />shall be provided with at least two grab-bars, <br />or a s~all shower with a seat and grab-bars <br />may be provided~in lieu of a bathtub. <br /> <br />5. Tub or shower bottom surfaces shall be slip re- <br /> sistant. <br /> <br />Grab-bars, towel bars, shower curtain rods and <br />similar bathroom accessories shall be install- <br />ed to sustain a dead weight of 250 pounds for <br />5 minutes at any point. <br /> <br /> <br />
