Window Sign shall mean any sign or letters, pictures, symbol or combination thereof to communicate ±nformation about a business, service, commodity, event, sale or other activity placed inside a window or upon window panes or glass and which is intended to be seen from the exterior. Section 40-283. Exemptions. The following are exem~pted from the Article: regulations of this (a) Signs not exceeding two (2) square feet in area and bearing only property nu~ers~ post box numbers, names of occupants of premises~ or hours of operation. (b) Name plates denoting the name of public or institu- tional buildings; (c) Memorial signs or tablets, names of buildings and date of erection when cut into masonry surface or when constructed of bronze or other non-combustible material; (d) Legal notices, identification, information or directional signs erected by the public bo~y including railroad crossing signs; (e) Signs attached to or displayed on public transportation vehicles; ,~.) Professional name plates installed flush with the building and not exceeding two [2) square feet in area; [g) Commemorative plaques and historical markers recog- nized b~~ the City of Portsmouth; [h) Signs denoting the names of residential developments when erected permanently as marke~s at the entrance to such residential development, provided the size of such sign does not exceed eighteen [18) square feet and height of six (6) feet; (i) Real estate signs advertising the sale, rental or lease of ~he premises on which displayed, provided %he ad- vertisement display area does no% exceed four (4) square feet in residential districts or eight (8) square feet in commercial districts or sixteen (16) square fee~ in industrial districts and only one (1) sign is erected per public street fronted;
