CITY OF PORTSMOUTH

83-134

Interdepaztraental C, orzesponctence Sheet

July 27, 1983

TO:

FROM:

Patrick J. Coffield, Assistant to the City Manager
Otis Jordan, Administrative Analyst

COPIES TO:

SUBJEGT:

Taxicab 0p~rmWnr~

As you are aware, several of the taxicab drivers at a recent
meeting in City Hall expressed some concerns regarding taxicab
operations in the City. The following is a list of those concerns
and responses:

A question was raised concerning the unlimited number of
taxicab parking stands downtown and the possible
need for additional stands and spaces.

Response--There is not a need at this time for additional
~tands. The recent change in the taxi ordinance only resulted
in an addition of 15 taxicabs in the area near the existing
stands. There may be a need in the future for a taxi stand
near the new ferry terminal. Sergeant Lewis is investigating
the need and a suitable location for such a stand.

2. A question was raised on whether taxicabs are allowed
to park free at a meter while the driver is in vehicle.

Response--The operator felt that the parking fee paid by the
owners should allow drivers to park at the meters. The fee
is intended to cover the cost of the spaces taken up by the
taxi stands. To allow the drivers to utilize the metered
spaces would mean the loss of needed revenues for the Parking
Authority.

3. A request was made for the Police Department to strictly
enforce no parking at taxicab stands for vehicles other
%hah tazcicabs.

Response--Sergeant Lewis has passed the word to patrol units
and meter maids to strictly enforce, effective immediately.
