WHERFAS, the recent annexation has brought within the city limits of Portsmouth that portion of State Highway 337, known as Old Suffolk Boulevard, extending from the former city limits ~o the Hodges Ferry Bridge; and W~EEE~S, u~der the annexation order the City is committed to expend within five years at least $155,000.00, being the City's one-fourth share under federal urban aid, for improvement of certain streets and roads, including that portion of State Highway 337 extending from Alexander's Corner to the Hodges Ferry Bridge; a~d WHERFAS, the aforesaid item of $155,000.00 has been secured through recent bond issue and ~s now available for the purpose aforesaid; and WHEPI~S, that portion of State Highway 337 between Alexander's Corner and the Hodges Ferry Bridge is now a heavily travelled thoroughfare and the traffic thereon is expected to increase substantially due to housing develop- menms within the City and in Norfolk County. NOW, T~]~EFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia: (a) That the State Highway Department be and the same hereby is requested to survey and design that portion of State Highway 337 between Alexander's Corner and the Hodges Ferry Bridge for improvemen~ under the federal urban aid program. (h) That the estimated cost of such project, including sur- veys to initiate the project, preparation of plans and con- struction costs, is approximately $750,000o00, and the City is willing to contribute its one-fourth share thereof under the federal urban aid program° (c) That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the State Highway Department and thc Bureau of Public Roads.
