4O RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE STATE CORPORATION COMMISSION TO PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF PORTS- MOUTH CONSUMERS WITH RESPECT TO THE RATE IN- CREASE REQUESTED BY THE CHESAPEAKE AND POTOMAC TELEPHONE COMPANY OF VIRGINIA. WHEREAS, Council is desirous of protecting the con- sumer interests of its constituents who are telephone subscribers, not only with respect to rates but with respect to the quality of service received; and WHEREAS, the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia provides telephone service in the City of Portsmouth; and has filed for a rate increase which would affect its sub- scribers in the City of Portsmouth; and WHEREAS, telephon~ service is a necessity for the citi- zens, businesses, industries and municipal government in the City of Portsmouth; and WHEREAS, the City does not wish to formally intervene in this rate proceeding, but does wish to inform the State Corpo- ration Commission of the interest of its citizens; and WHEREAS, the Attorney General of Virginia has already intervened on behalf of all the subscribers of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Virginia, including the citi- zens of Portsmouth; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that the State Corporation Com- mission is hereby requested to protect the interest of telephone consumers ~n the City of Portsmouth and to insure the mainten- ance of high quality service at reasonable rates for telephone consumers in the City of Portsmouth. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is direct- ed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Clerk of the State Corporation Commission.
