63 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION URGING THE NAME OF THE NAVAL SHIPYARD SITUATE IN <br />THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, BE C~NGED TO THE PORTSMOUTH <br />NAVAL SHIPYARD. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, situate within the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, is a Naval Shipyard whose long and cherishad tra- <br />ditions have been an integral part of the history of the City <br />of Portsmouth since 1767 when Andrew Sprowle established the <br />Go,port Shipyard; and <br /> <br /> WHER~AS, such Naval Shipyard has been a strategic <br />facility in the defense of the United States of America from <br />the Revolutionary War to the present; and <br /> <br /> $~4EREAS, since 1929, the name of the Naval Shipyard <br />has inappropriately and confusingly been known as the Norfolk <br />Navy Yard and later the Norfolk Naval Shipyard; and <br /> <br />renaming <br />Shipyard. <br /> <br />W~R~ASr such confusion should be eliminated by <br />such shipyard as the Portsmouth, Virginia, Naval <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of <br />the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that it urges that the name <br />of the Naval Yard situate in the City of Portsmouth be changed <br />more appropriately to the name of the Portsmouth Naval Ship- <br />yard. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk is <br />directed to forward copies of this resolution to appropriate <br />authorities. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, at a meeting held July 8, 1975. <br /> <br />Teste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
