81 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE DISESTABLIS}~ENT OF THE MARINE BARRACKS <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> ~w~w~ Chief .Jpe_a~o~.= directed <br /> ~R~b, the of Naval ~ r ~ ~ has <br />tha~ ~ ~-~ ' <br /> ~.~ ~ BarracKs ~_n Portsmouth ~¼~ consolidated <br />Marine ~=_acks in ~o~o~ ~rren-~ -~ Seetember 30,-IQ75- <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Marine Barracks in Portsmouth, Virginia} <br />has a long and distinguished history as the second oldest bar- <br />racks in continuous service to the Marine Corps; and, <br /> <br /> ~EREAS, the Barracks has been the home of men who <br />have distinguished themselves as Medal of Honor winners or by <br />becoming Commandant of the Marine Corps; and, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, 860,000 dollar barracks modernization has <br />recently been completed on Building M-32 and the barracks faci- <br />lities and real estate under Marine Corps control at the Ship- <br />yard is greater than those under Marine control at the Naval <br />Base; and, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Sea School Atlantic located in Portsmouth <br />and the Marine Sea School in San Diego are slated to be consoli- <br />dated which will make available additional barracks space for <br />the Marine Security Guard Force in the Norfolk-Portsmouth area; <br />and, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there is no apparent significant advantage <br />for consolidating the barracks command at the Naval Base, Norfolk; <br /> <br /> NOW, T~{EREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Portsmouth City <br />Council is opposed to any move to disestablish the,Marine Barracks, <br />Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, as a major Marine <br />Corps command for the traditional, historical, and practical <br />reasons stated herein; and, <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any consolidation of Marine <br />Barracks in Tidewater be accomplished by headquartering the com- <br />mand in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the Marine Barracks in the Ship- <br />yard. <br /> <br /> Adopted by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Vir- <br />ginia, at a meeting held September 14, 1976. <br /> <br />Taste: <br /> <br />City Clerk <br /> <br /> <br />
