81 A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE DISESTABLIS}~ENT OF THE MARINE BARRACKS PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA. ~w~w~ Chief .Jpe_a~o~.= directed ~R~b, the of Naval ~ r ~ ~ has tha~ ~ ~-~ ' ~.~ ~ BarracKs ~_n Portsmouth ~¼~ consolidated Marine ~=_acks in ~o~o~ ~rren-~ -~ Seetember 30,-IQ75- WHEREAS, the Marine Barracks in Portsmouth, Virginia} has a long and distinguished history as the second oldest bar- racks in continuous service to the Marine Corps; and, ~EREAS, the Barracks has been the home of men who have distinguished themselves as Medal of Honor winners or by becoming Commandant of the Marine Corps; and, WHEREAS, 860,000 dollar barracks modernization has recently been completed on Building M-32 and the barracks faci- lities and real estate under Marine Corps control at the Ship- yard is greater than those under Marine control at the Naval Base; and, WHEREAS, the Sea School Atlantic located in Portsmouth and the Marine Sea School in San Diego are slated to be consoli- dated which will make available additional barracks space for the Marine Security Guard Force in the Norfolk-Portsmouth area; and, WHEREAS, there is no apparent significant advantage for consolidating the barracks command at the Naval Base, Norfolk; NOW, T~{EREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Portsmouth City Council is opposed to any move to disestablish the,Marine Barracks, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, as a major Marine Corps command for the traditional, historical, and practical reasons stated herein; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any consolidation of Marine Barracks in Tidewater be accomplished by headquartering the com- mand in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the Marine Barracks in the Ship- yard.
