Such allowance shatl be in addition to any benefits <br /> provided for in subsection (a) above. <br /> <br /> (c) Should a member become eligible for service retire- <br /> ment in accordance with Section 31-262 but continue as an <br /> employee, the member may, on a form prescribed by the board, <br /> and in advance of retirement, make an election of a joint <br /> and last survivor option as described in subsection Ia) (1) <br /> of Section 31-274. The designated fraction of the option <br /> shall be any amount greater than one-half (1/2) or fifty (50) <br /> per cent and equal to or less than one hundred (100) per cent. <br /> <br /> If a member havinq made such a designation shall die in <br /> service before retiremSnt from a cause not compensable <br /> under the Virginia Workmen's Compensation Act there shall <br /> be paid a retirement allowance to the widow or widower <br /> equal to the designated option per cent of the allowance <br /> tha~ ~ould have been payable to the member had the member <br /> retired under the provisions of Sectio~ 31-262 on the date <br /> of his death with the option so designated; or the amount <br /> as accorded i~ subsection (b) of this section, whichever is <br /> greaaer. Upon retirement of the member, the member's retire- <br /> ment allowance shall be calculated to inc~lude the election <br /> previously designated, unless such retirement is for disability. <br /> The retirement allowance to be continued after the member, s <br /> death to the widow or widower shall be limited to a maximum <br /> of one-half (1/3) of the decreased allowance received by the <br /> member during %he member's lifetime. <br /> <br /> In makinq an election of an option as provided under <br />this subsecti6n, a member may also elect a modification of <br />the joint and last survivor option whereby a provision is made <br />for no decrease in allowance should the member's spouse die <br />before the retirement of the member, or a return to an <br />undecreased allowance should the member's spouse dim before <br />the member died durinq retirement. Such modification shall <br />be determined by an actuarial report as of the retirement <br />of the member. <br /> <br /> Section-31-271. Additional benefits before r~etirement for <br /> service connected cause. <br /> <br /> (a) Should a member die in service at any time before <br />retirement from a cause compensable under the Virginia <br />Workmen's Compensation Act, there shall be paid. in addition <br />to any other benefits under this Article, an annual allowance <br />payable monthly to the widow of such member during her widow- <br />hood, if he leaves a widow, equal to one-half (1/2) of the <br />member's average final compensation.
