emergency warning lights are activated if (i) the <br />headlamps are wired to allow either the upper beam or <br />lower beam to flash, but not both, and (ii) the headlamp <br />system includes a sensor which prevents flashing of <br />headlamps when headlamps are required to be lighted <br />under ~23-366 of this code. <br /> <br /> Vehicles used for the principal purpose of towing <br />and servicing disabled vehicles or in constructing, <br />maintaining and repairing highways or utilities on or <br />along public highways, vehicles used for the principal <br />purpose of removing hazardous or polluting substances <br />from state waters and drainage areas on or along public <br />highways for use only when performing such duties and <br />hi-rail vehicles may be equipped with flashing, blinking <br />or alternating amber warning lights of a type approved <br />by the Superintendent, but such lights on hi-rail <br />vehicles shall be activated only when such vehicles are <br />operated on railroad rails; however, vehicles used by <br />individuals for emergency snow removal purposes shall <br />also be allowed to use such amber warning lights during <br />such snow removal operation. <br /> <br /> High intensity amber flashing lights, visible for <br />at least five hundred (500) feet, as prescribe~ by the <br />Superintendent, shall also be required for use on any <br />vehicle which is engaged in either escorting, or towing <br />overdimensional materials, equipment, boats, or <br />manufactured housing units by authority of a highway <br />hauling permit pursuant to §46.1-343 of the Code of <br />Virginia. Such lights shall be mounted on the tOPS of <br />the escort and tow vehicles and on the upper rear end of <br />the overdimensional vehicle or load for maximum <br />visibility, front and rear. However, a vehicle <br />operating by authority of a permit issued pursuant to <br />~46.1-343 of the Code of Virginia shall be deemeJ to be <br />in compliance with the requirements of this section if <br />it is accompanied by escort vehicles. The provisions of <br />this paragraph shall apply to vehicles or loads which <br />are either more than twelve feet wide or more than <br />seventy-five feet long. <br /> <br /> (a) A member of any fire department, volunteer <br />fire company or volunteer rescue squad may equip one <br />vehicle owned by the member with not more than two (2) <br />flashing or steady-burning red or red and white lights <br />of a type approved by the SuperIntendent, for use by <br />members only in answering emergency calls. <br /> <br /> (b) Dealers o~ businesses engaged in the sale of <br />fire, rescue or police vehicles or ambulances may, for <br />demonstration purposes, equip such vehicles with colored <br />warning lights. <br /> <br /> <br />
