headlamps are required to be lighted under section 23-366 <br />of this Code. <br /> <br /> Vehicles used for the principal purpose of towing and <br />servicing disabled vehicles or in constructing, maintaining <br />and repaIring highways or utilities on or along public <br />highways, vehicles used for the purpose of removing <br />hazardous or polluting substances from state waters and <br />drainage areas on or along public highways for use only <br />when performing such duties and hi-rail vehicles may be <br />equipped with flashing, blinking or alternating amber <br />warning lights of type approved by the superintendent, but <br />such lights on hi-rail vehicles shall be activated only <br />when such vehicles are operated on railroad rails; however, <br />vehicles used by individuals for emergency snow removal <br />purposes shall also be allowed to use such amber warning <br />lights during such snow removal operation. <br /> <br /> High-intensity amber flashing lights, visible for at <br />least five hundred (500) feet, as prescribed by the <br />Superintendent, shall also be required for use on any <br />vehicle ~hich is engaged in either escorting, or towing <br />overdimensional materials, equipment, boats, or <br />manufactured housing units by authority of a highway <br />hauling permit pursuant to Section 46.1-343 of the Code of <br />Virginia, 1950, as amended. Such lights shall be mounted <br />on the tops of the escort and tow vehicles and on the upper <br />rear end of the overdimensional vehicle or load for maximum <br />visibility, front and rear. However, a vehicle operating <br />by authority of a permit issued pursuant to Section <br />46.1-343 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended, shall <br />be deemed to be in compliance with the requirements of this <br />section if it is accompanied by escort vehicles. The <br />provisions of this subdivision shall apply to vehicles or <br />loads which are either more than twelve (12) feet wide or <br />more than seventy-five (75) feet long. <br /> <br /> (a) A member of any fire department, volunteer fire <br />company or volunteer rescue squad may equip one vehicle <br />awned by the member with not more than two (2) flashing or <br />steady-burning red or red and white lights of a type <br />approved by the Superintendent, for use by members only in <br />answering emergency calls. <br /> <br /> (b) Dealers or businesses engaged in the sale of <br />fire, rescue or police vehicles or ambulances may, for <br />demonstration purDoses, equip such vehicles with colored <br />warning lights. <br /> <br /> The provIsions of this section limiting interior <br />lights to nor more than fifteen (15) candlepower shall not <br />apply to alternating, blinking, or flashing colored <br />emergency lights mounted inside law enforcement motor <br />vehicles which may otherwise legally be equipped with such <br /> <br /> <br />
