1988-108 <br /> <br />AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 4 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1973, BY AMENDING SECTIONS 4-24(c), <br />4-34, 4-38, 4-66(a), 4-67, AND 4-68 THEREOF PERTAINING TO DOGS <br />AND CATS. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Sections 4-24[c) 4-34, 4-38, 4-66[a), 4-67, and <br />4-68 of the Code of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, 1973, be <br />amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 4-24. <br /> <br />Impoundment of dogs running at large without <br />leash or muzzle. <br /> <br /> (c) Duration, redemption. Every dog impounded pursuant <br />to subsection (a) of this section shall be confined for <br />five (5) days, such period to commence on the day immediately <br />following the day the dog is initially confined in the <br />Portsmouth Humane Society facility. During said period of <br />confinement, the dog may be redeemed by its owner upon proof <br />of ownership and by paying to the attendant at the dog pound <br />the sum of three dollars ($3.00) for the first day and one <br />dollar ($1.00) for each additional day or any part thereof to <br />cover the cost of maintaining a pen for such dog and of the <br />care and keep of such dog. All such impounding fees shall be <br />paid over to the City Treasurer monthlv. Payment of <br />impounding fees shall not relieve the owner of liability for <br />any violation of this Code. <br /> <br /> Upon redemption of an unlicensed dog by its owner, the <br />Portsmouth Humane Society shall notify the owner that an <br />Animal Control Officer of the City may appear at his place of <br />residence on or after seven (7) days following the redemption <br />of the dog. At such time, the owner of the redeemed dog shall <br />present to the Animal Control Officer the receipt for the <br />license fee required to be paid by this Code. <br /> <br />Section 4-34. Required. <br /> <br /> It shall be unlawful for any person to own a dog four (4) <br />months old or older in the city unless such dog is licensed as <br />required by the provisions of this article. <br /> <br />Section 4-38. When tax payable. <br /> <br /> The license tax on dogs required by this division shall <br />be due and payable as follows: <br /> <br /> (a) On or before January first and not later than <br />January thirty-first of each year, the owner of any dog four <br /> <br /> <br />
