to allow either the upper beam or lower beam to flash, but <br />not both, and (ii) the headlamp system includes a sensor <br />which prevents flashing of headlamps when headlamps are <br />required to be lighted~under section 23-366 of this Code. <br /> <br /> (d) Vehicles used for the principal purpose of towing <br />and servicing disabled vehicles or in constructing, <br />maintaining and repairing highways or utilities on or along <br />public highways, vehicles used for the purpose of removing <br />hazardous or polluting substances from state waters and <br />drainage areas on or along public highways or use only w~en <br />performing such duties and hi-rail vehicles may be equipped <br />with flashing, blinking or alternating amber warning lights <br />of a type approved by the superintendent, but such lights or <br />hi-rail vehicles shall be activated only when such vehicles <br />are operated on railroad rails; however, vehicles used by <br />individuals for emergency snow removal purposes shall also be <br />allowed to use such amber warning lights during such snow <br />removal operation. <br /> <br /> (e) Refuse collection vehicles may be equipped with <br />flashing, Dlinking, or alternating amber warning lights of <br />type approved by the Superintendent. Such lights shall be <br />activated only when engaged in solid waste collection <br />operations. <br /> <br />a <br /> <br /> (f) High-intensity amber flashing lights, visible for <br />at least five hundred (500) feet, as prescribed by the <br />superintendent, shall also be required for use on any vehicle <br />which is engaged in either escorting, or towing <br />overdimensional materials, equipment, boats, or manufactured <br />housing units by authority of highway hauling permit pursuant <br />to Section 46.1.-343 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as <br />amended. Such lights shall be mounted on the tops of the <br />escort and tow vehicles and on ~he upper rear end of the <br />overdimensional vehicle or load~for maximum visibility, from <br />and rear. However, a vehicle operating by authority of a <br />permit issued pursuant to Section 46.1-343 of the Code of <br />Virginia, 1950, as amended, shall be deemed to be in <br />compliance with the requirements of this section if it is <br />accompanied by escort vehicles. The provisions of this <br />subdivision shall apply to vehicles or loads which are either <br />more than twelve (12) feet wide or more than seven,y-five <br />(75) feet long. <br /> <br /> g. A member of any fire department, volunteer fire <br />company or volunteer rescue squad may equip one vehicle owned <br />by the member with not more than two (2) flashing or <br />steady-burning red or red and white lights of a type approved <br />by the superintendent, for use by members only in answering <br />emergency calls. <br /> <br /> Ih) Dealers or businesses engaged in the sale of fire, <br />rescue or police vehicles or ambulances may, for <br /> <br /> <br />
