1991-45 <br /> <br />AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 2 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1988, BY AMENDING SECTION 2-111 THEREOF, <br />PERTAINING TO LEGAL HOLIDAYS. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Section 2-111 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 2-111. Legal holidays. <br /> <br /> (a) The following days are designated as legal holidays <br />for all employees of the city, except policemen and <br />firefighters and those engaged in such employment as <br />necessarily requires their daily services, and for all state <br />officers performing duties for the city: <br /> <br />(1) The first day of January: New Year's Day; <br /> <br />(2) <br /> <br />The third Monday in January: Lee-Jackson-King Day <br />to honor Robert Edward Lee (1806-1870), Thomas <br />Jonathan (Stonewall) Jackson (1824-1863), and Martin <br />Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), defenders of causes; <br /> <br />(3) <br /> <br />The third Monday in February: George Washington Day <br />to honor George Washington (1732-1799), the first <br />President of the United States of America; <br /> <br />(4) <br /> <br />The last Monday in May: Memorial Day <br />persons who made the supreme sacrifice <br />their lives in defense of Virginia and <br />States of America; <br /> <br />to honor all <br />in giving <br />the United <br /> <br />(5) The fourth day of July: Independence Day to honor <br /> the signing of the Declaration of Independence; <br /> <br />(6) <br /> <br />The first Monday in September: Labor Day to honor <br />all people who work for a livelihood in Virginia and <br />the United States of America; <br /> <br />(7) <br /> <br />The eleventh day of November: Veteran's Day to <br />honor all persons who served in the Armed Forces of <br />Virginia and the United States of America; <br /> <br /> <br />
