AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 40 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1988, BY AMENDING SECTIONS 40-22, <br />40-61.2, 40-61.7 AND TABLES 40-61.1-1 AND 40-61.1-2 THEREOF, <br />PERTAINING TO CANOPY SIGNS. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Section 40-22 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended by adding thereto <br />definition, "Sign, canopy," to read as follows: <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />Section 40-22. Definitions. <br /> <br /> Sign, canopy. Any sign that is part of or is attached <br />an awning, canopyf or other fabric, plastic or structural <br />protective cover over a door, entrance, window or outdoor <br />service area. A marquee is not a canopy. <br /> <br />to <br /> <br /> 2. That Section 40-61.2 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended by adding thereto <br />Condition (14) to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 40-61.2. <br /> <br />Sign conditions supplement to tables <br />40-61.1-1 and 40-61.1-2. <br /> <br /> (14) Canopy signs. The advertising display area shall be <br />confined to the vertical surface of any canopy or awning and <br />shall consist only of the name and/or logo of the business or <br />institution sewn, painted, stenciled or otherwise placed on <br />the surface. Canopy signs for certain institutional uses are <br />permitted in all zoning districts subject to Section 40-61.7. <br /> <br /> 3. That Section 40-61.7 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended to read as follows: <br /> <br />Section 40-61.7. Signs for institutions. <br /> <br /> Notwithstanding the requirements of Section 40-61.4(b), <br />a religious, educational or other public or quasi-public <br />institution in any zoning district shall be entitled to a <br />certificate of compliance for one institutional sign, or <br />bulletin board for each separate street frontage, provided <br />that each such sign must be located on the same zone lot with <br />the institution and provided further that the sign shall not <br />have an advertising display area of more than eighteen (18) <br />square feet or a height of more than six (6) feet. Such signs <br />shall be illuminated only by the reflector method. Such signs <br />shall be set back from each property line by a distance at <br />least equal to the height of the sign. In districts allowing <br />larger or taller on-pr~misDs signs for business, such <br />institutions shall comply with the district regulations. <br /> <br /> <br />
