AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 40 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, 1988, BY AMENDING SECTIONS 40-61.2 AND <br />40-61.5 ~ND TABLES 40-61.1-1 AND 40-61.1-2 THEREOF, PERTAINING <br />TO SIGNS. <br /> <br /> BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia: <br /> <br /> 1. That Section 40-61.2 of the Code of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, 1988, be amended by renumbering as <br />Condition (1.1) canopy signs, that was previously numbered <br />Condition (14) and by adding thereto Conditions( 9.1) portable <br />signs and (11.1) temporary signs to read as follows: <br /> <br />(1.1) <br /> <br />CANOPY SIGNS. The advertising display area shall <br />be confined to the vertical surface of any canopy <br />or awning and shall consist only of the name <br />and/or logo of the business or institution sewn, <br />painted, stenciled or otherwise placed on the <br />surface. Canopy signs for certain institutional <br />uses are permitted in all zoning districts subject <br />to Section 40-61.7. <br /> <br />(9.1) PORTABLE SIGNS shall include: <br /> <br />(i) any sign not permanently attached to the <br />ground or to a permanent structure; <br /> <br />(ii) any sign designed to be transported, <br />including, but not limited to, a sign designed to <br />be transported by means of wheels; <br /> <br />(iii) any sign with chassis or support <br />construction without wheels; <br /> <br />(iv) any sign converted to or constructed as <br />A-frame or a T-frame except as permitted in <br />Condition (ll.1)(ii); or <br /> <br />an <br /> <br />(ll.1) <br /> <br />(v) any sign attached to or painted on a motor <br />vehicle parked and visible from the public <br />right-of-way, where said motor vehicle is left in <br />the same area for a length of time in excess of 60 <br />days so that said motor vehicle has ceased to be <br />used as a means of transportation in the normal <br />operation of the business. <br /> <br />TEMPORARY SIGNS. A temporary sign or displa~ is a <br />sign constructed of cloth, canvas, fabric, paper, <br />plywood or other light materials. There shall be <br />no more than one temporary sign per esuablishment <br />per zone lot. <br /> <br /> <br />
