<br />"A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORTATION OF THE
<br />COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA TO ALLOCATE FUNDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE WESTERN
<br />FREEWAY THROUGH THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH TO ITS CONNECTION WITH 1-664 AND REQUESTING
<br />THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND TRANSPORTATION OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA TO
<br />REQUEST THAT THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DECLARE THE SECTION
<br />OF THE [-664 PROJECT FROM 21ST STREET IN THE CITY OF NEWPORT NEWS TO ROUTE 1- IN
<br />THE CITY OF SUFFOLK AN ESSENTIAl GAP iN THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, has previously expressed its
<br />support for the completion of construction of the 1-664 Project to connect Chesapeake and
<br />Newport News as a high priority project of the Department of Highways & Transportation of
<br />the Commonwealth of Virginia; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth is of the opinion that completion of
<br />the 1-664 Project is vital to the transportation need of the citizens on the north and south
<br />sides of Hampton Roads; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, completion of the 1-664 Project will provide a western terminus for the proposed
<br />Western Freeway which, this Council has continually supported as a priority project in connec-
<br />tion with future development in the City of Portsmouth.
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that
<br />it hereby reaffirms its support for construction of the Western Freeway through the City of
<br />Portsmouth to its connection w~th 1-654 and requests that the Department of Highways and Tran
<br />po:ration of the Commonwealth of Virginia allocate funds for the cons~ructmon of the Western
<br />
