<br />Civic League, requested a resolution ~o adopt~:~he USS Co,at Sea designating Portsmouth as
<br />its honorary home port.
<br />
<br /> On motion of Mr. Whitlow and seconded by Mr. Gray, the following resolution was adopted,
<br />and by the following vote:

<br />"A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE USS CORAL SEA AND ITS COMMANDING OFFICER AND
<br />CREW FOR THE SERVICES RENDERED TO THE CITY AND ITS CITIZENS.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, recgonizes and acknowledges
<br />the USS Coral Sea is an important element of our national defense, and without any further
<br />contribution, would be worthy of recognition; and
<br />

<br /> WHEREAS, while the USS Coral Sea was undergoing an overhaul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard
<br />in Portsmouth, Captain Jeremy D. Taylor announced as a gesture of good will, the initiation of
<br />community service projects for the officers and crew of the USS Coral Sea; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the officers and crew of
<br />to provide entertainment and emergency
<br />undertook a lamp post painting project
<br />guides for the Seawall Festival; and
<br />
<br />the USS Coral Sea initiated the "Safe and Sound Program
<br />radio communication facilities in the downtown tunnel,
<br />in the Olde Towne section of Portsmouth, and provided
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, in addition thereto, individual crew members from the USS Coral Sea undertook
<br />numerous community service projects; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the City of Portsmouth has received over $140,636 in labor as a result of these
<br />endeavors and, more importantly, developed a warm appreciation for the crew of the USS Coral
<br />Sea as representatives of "Our Navy".
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia,
<br />recognizes the services performed by the crew of the USS Coral Sea, and extends its appreciati
<br />to Captain Jeremy D. Taylor and those members of the crew who participated for the services
<br />rendered to our City and its citizens, and in further recognition thereof, formally adopts the
<br />USS Coral Sea and designates this City as it honorary home port.
<br />
<br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that as a further token of our appreciation the City, in coopera-
<br />tion with the Portsmouth Council of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, invites the crew
<br />members who have participated in the community service programs to a recognition picnic on
<br />September 19, 1984 at Sleepy Hole Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and fellowship."
