May 28~ 1~85 WHEREAS, the religious and private community in Portsmouth is leading efforts to establis an emergency shslter thereby assisting our municipality with the burden of responsibility in meeting this growing social problem: and WHEREAS, the Wesley Community Service Center is deeply concerned about those less fortunate in our city and especially their need for safe, decent, housing conditions at affordable costs, and further believes that mmprov~ng life for the "least of us" so improves it for all of us. the plight of and sanitary the quality of NOW, THEREFORE, THIS BOARD OF DIRECTORS does hereby express its shock and dismay as its members join to condemn Council's action to oppose an application for additional assisteed housing. WE HAVE FURTHER RESOLVED ro call upon the Portsmouth City Ccuncil and the Portsmouth Redevelopment and ~ousing Authority to reas-sess the housing needs of low and moderate income persons and families in Portsmouth; and to take immediate steps which will encourage and promote low cost and%r subsidized housing in proportion to Portsmouth's need. WE HAVE FURTHER RESOLVED~that a copy of this resolution be read before and presented to the Portsmouth City Council at its appropriate and regular meeting, and that copy be forwardec to the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority. This resolution was unanimously adopted by the Board of Directors of the Wesley Community Service Center, ~nc. at its regular meeting of May 13, 1985. Signed by Malvin D. Twitty, President and Lillian A. Mayo, Secretary' Vice Mayor Webb stated that the Mayor had written to Mr. John Hatcher, Jr., Director of Wesley Community Service Center, on all concerns mentioned in the resolution presented. 85-162 Ccuncilman Beamer commented on bicycles on the streets that were not and that the public should be informed of the need for registration.
