<br />August 8, 2023 <br /> <br />23 - 269 - Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes spoke on the following: <br /> <br /> Clean up of neighborhoods by the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing <br />˗ <br />Authority (PRHA). <br /> Crosswalk placed on George Washington Highway near March Landing. <br />˗ <br /> Citizens concern with reporting crimes. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Interim City Manager Terry asked that information regarding the incident be <br />sent to her and Police Chief Jenkins to investigate. <br /> Economic Development Authority’s method of recruiting businesses to the city. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Interim City Manager Terry will provide a report back. <br /> Discussion on recruiting a search firm for the City Assessor position. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Mr. Tillage spoke on the following: <br /> <br /> Concern with cleanliness of City. <br />˗ <br /> Update on the status of the water tank in Churchland and the water tank on <br />˗ <br />Victory Boulevard. <br /> Asked for a report back on the phases of each project included on the Capital <br />˗ <br />Improvement Project list that was provided by Interim City Manager Terry. <br /> Asked for an update on the ARPA gift card distribution. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Mr. Moody spoke on the following: <br /> <br /> Condition and cleanliness of wooden fences in the main thoroughfares. <br />˗ <br /> Update on infrared and flock camera implementation. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Police Chief Jenkins provided an update. <br /> <br /> Dr. Whitaker spoke on the following: <br /> <br /> Supplemental funding for Sheriff’s Department. <br />˗ <br /> Asked for the source of the funding for school metal detectors. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Interim City Manager Terry provided that information. <br /> Asked when will the presentation on Sugar Hill by Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander <br /> <br />be scheduled and asked that federal and state representatives be invited. <br /> <br /> City Attorney Graham-Williams provided an update. <br />˗ <br /> <br /> Mayor Glover spoke on the following: <br /> <br />rd <br /> 233 Birthday Celebration of the United States Coast Guard. <br />˗ <br /> Recycling Clean Up Day, Saturday, August 5, 2023. <br />˗ <br /> Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) participation at Youth Leadership <br />˗ <br />Development Program. <br /> <br /> Dr. Whitaker asked that a discussion on the process to hire for the City Assessor <br /> <br />position be part of a closed session at the next meeting in September. <br /> Mayor Glover concurred with the request that it would be placed on the next <br />˗ <br />agenda. <br /> <br />23 - 270 - Report on Pending Items <br /> <br /> <br /> There were no pending items. <br /> <br />23 - 271 - Non-Agenda Speakers <br /> <br />1. Shirley Cherry, 949 Vermont Avenue, thanked City Council for revitalizing Bernard <br />Griffin Park. She also asked that a sprinkle system be added. <br /> Councilman Whitaker asked that Interim City Manager Terry provide a report back <br />˗ <br />on the cost to implement a sprinkler system. <br /> <br /> Interim City Manager Terry will provide a report back. <br /> <br />2. Cliff Page, 465 Primrose Street, spoke on fire near his business. <br /> <br />3.
