November 10, 2020 <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br /> <br /> Begin the process of procuring new signage in conjunction with renovations for the <br />park. <br /> <br />1. Mark Geduldig-Yatrofsky, P. O. Box 50141, spoke in support of this item. <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Ms. Lucas-Burke, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />“RESOLUTION TO RENAME MT. HERMON PARK AS BERNARD D. GRIFFIN SR. <br />PARK. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, <br />Bernard D. Griffin Sr. was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />was a proud graduate of I.C. Norcom High School, and was a lifetime member of New <br />First Baptist Church Taylorsville in Portsmouth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> Mr. Griffin was extremely active in the Portsmouth community, and a <br />member of the Portsmouth Branch of the NAACP, American Legion Post 190, the I.C. <br />Norcom Alumni Association, the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament Committee <br />Executive Board, and many other civic organizations; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> Mr. Griffin served as chairman of the Portsmouth School Board and <br />as Vice Mayor and Mayor of the City of Portsmouth; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> Mr. Griffin was admired as a wise and reasonable voice on City <br />Council and in civic affairs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> in appreciation for Mr. Griffin’s lifetime of service to Portsmouth, the <br />City Council desires to rename Mt. Hermon Park in his honor and memory; <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia that the name of Mt. Hermon Park located at 901 Florida Avenue is hereby <br /> <br />officially changed to Bernard D. Griffin Sr. Park.” <br /> <br />Ayes: Battle, Clark, Glover, Lucas-Burke, Moody, Psimas, Rowe <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />20 - 279 - Adoption of resolutions approving the 2021 State Legislative Package <br />and the 2021 Federal Legislative Package. <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br /> Every department within the City of Portsmouth was provided an opportunity to <br /> <br />identify issues for inclusion in the 2021 State and Federal Legislative Packages. <br /> <br /> Submissions were included in the draft Power-Point presentation presented to City <br />Council at its Public Work Sessions on Tuesday October 13 and Tuesday October 27, <br /> <br />2020. <br /> <br /> Portsmouth City Council is set to formally adopt the 2021 State and Federal <br />Legislative Packages at its regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br /> <br /> The items included in the 2021 State and Federal Legislative Packages were first <br />vetted with the City Manager. <br /> <br /> These items were then presented and vetted with the City Council members to <br />determine which items would remain and which would be eliminated. <br /> <br /> The items included in the State Legislative Package were agreed upon and will be <br />submitted for introduction by members of the Portsmouth General Assembly Delegation. <br /> <br /> The items for the 2021 Federal Legislative Package will be forwarded to the City’s <br />Congressional Delegation. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
