Thomas Potter, <br />the meeting with prayer, <br />Flag. <br /> <br />Pastor of Pinecrest Baptist Church, opened <br />followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to thc <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mr. Simpson, minutels of the <br />called meeting of. September 9, 1986~ and minute~ of the regular <br />neeting of September 9, 1986, ~o be approved as received, a~d ~as <br />~dopted by unanmmous vo~e. <br /> <br />86-336 Pnblic Hearing for Portsmouth Flag Associates. <br /> <br />Allan Roby, 1 Harbor Court, representing Portsmouth Fl~g <br />Associates, Inc., requested an additional 2 minutes ~o speak. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mrs. Lucas and seconded by Mrs. Webb, to grant <br />~dditional 2 minutes, as requested, and was adopted by unan~m~ <br /> <br />Adm. Roby made the following~presentation: <br /> <br /> "I have been a resident of Portsmouth for two years and am <br />pleased to have this opportunity to make a presentation on behalf <br />~f Portsmouth Flag Associates, Inc. <br /> <br /> We wish to express our appreciation to yau aBd others ~ho have <br /> accomplished so much with your remarkable PortsmoUth RenaisFan£e. <br /> <br /> ~e have been inspired to suggest that, as the renaissance work <br /> ~oes forward, some small part of the effort be turned over {o the <br /> ~outh of the City. Our school sge citizens are competent, ~nd de- <br /> ;erring, to take part in this grand affair. <br /> <br /> ~ Specifically, the Portsmouth Flag Associates ~equests t~at the <br /> ~y prov~e~an ~pportunity for the students of all public,~private <br /> ~m parocnma± s~ools, ~0 join in making a gift to the City~ of a <br /> ~±agpole from which to disp~la~? our National Flag from a prominemt <br /> location. The flagpole and flag to be memorial in recognition of <br />dom;~ll Portsmouth sons and daughters who have served the causelof, free <br /> <br /> 1 <br /> We feel that location should be one where "O d Glory" c~ul4 be <br />easily seen by our own citizens, by visitors and by the crews of <br />~assing ships and craft. <br /> <br />~ After discussing with many citizens, with service clubi and <br />ar~ous organizations, we have been assured of widespread suppSrt <br />for such a project. The City Manager has encouraged the idea <br />displaying the flag within the waterfront area, and has sue~'ested a <br />few possible sites for the flagpole. <br /> <br /> . We~now ~ome tO the City Council, seeking apprioval of a <br />smte which w~ll be recognized by all viewers as beling hiehl~ <br />priate for this patriotic display. We are strongl~ of t~e <br />that the nature of this endeavor demands the highe:st degree <br />excellence in execution.
