June 26, 2018 <br /> <br />Discussion: <br /> <br /> The Portsmouth Police Department (PPD) was awarded an ABC Alcohol <br />Education and Prevention Grant in the amount $2,500 to fund an alcohol education <br />program designed to reach out to the youth of Portsmouth to discuss and demonstrate <br />the effects of alcohol on a person; not just the physical effects, but social and <br />psychological effects as well. <br /> <br /> The program’s curriculum has two equal stages. The first stage is in the form of <br />classroom instruction sessions. The second stage will consist of hands-on activities <br />designed to reinforce the lessons presented, learned and discussed in the classroom. <br /> <br /> In 2017, the PPD successfully brought alcohol awareness to 237 students. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br /> <br /> <br /> There is no cash or in-kind match requirement from the City for this grant. In <br />addition, there is no obligation from the City once the grant has ended. <br /> <br />Recommended Action: <br /> <br /> Adoption of the ordinance. <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br /> <br /> The Finance Department will make the necessary budget adjustment. Funding is <br />available to support the efforts of law enforcement agencies in developing or enhancing <br />youth programming within their communities. <br /> <br /> Virginia Rules Camp is a law-themed summer day-camp experience for <br />middle/high school aged youth hosted by local law enforcement agencies as a fun, <br />healthy way to spend a summer week, receive interactive instruction on Virginia law, and <br />build positive relationships with law enforcement officers that serve their communities. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br /> <br /> The Portsmouth Police Department (PPD) has been awarded grant funding in the <br />amount of $5,000.00 from the Virginia Rules Camp Grant Program sponsored by the <br />Office of the Virginia Attorney General. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
