August 27, 2013 <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia that it <br />hereby commits the sum of $780,000, previously appropriated in the FY 2013-14 <br />Capital Improvements Fund, as matching funds fora $720,000 grant in revenue sharing <br />funds from the Virginia Department of Transportation towards the extension of Elliott <br />Avenue." <br />Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Meeks, Moody, Psimas, Randall, Wright <br />Nays: None <br />- New Business - <br />13 - 359 -Boards and Commissions <br />Mr. Moody offered the following nominations: <br />Portsmouth Port & Industrial Commission <br />James Jewell to be appointed to fill a term ending December 31, 2017, replacing Ann <br />Kirk. <br />Social Services Advisory Commission <br />Rev. Johnnie Drake to be appointed to fill a term ending June 30, 2015, replacing <br />Angela Hicks. <br />Supplemental Retirement Board <br />Jacquelyn Scott to be appointed to fill a four year term ending September 30, 2017, <br />replacing Russell Bailey. <br />Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Mr. Cherry, to close nominations, and <br />the above nominations were adopted by the following vote: <br />Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Meeks, Moody, Psimas, Randall, Wright <br />Nays: None <br />13 - 360 -Items Submitted by Council Members <br />- Mayor Wright spoke on the following: <br />- 43rd Annual Seawall Arts Show <br />- Congratulated Barbara Vinson on receiving the Gladstone M. Hill Friends of the <br />Arts Award <br />- Farmer's Market <br />- Back to School Rallies and Community Days at Grove, Centennial and Mount <br />Calvary Baptist Churches <br />- New teachers orientation <br />- Gwendolyn Watkins, Principal of Parkview Elementary School, Virginian Pilot <br />article <br />- Ms. Psimas spoke on the following events: <br />- Community Back to School Rally sponsored by Fourth Baptist Church <br />- Portsmouth Community Health Center Back to School Rally <br />- Congratulated Barbara Vinson for receiving the Gladstone M. Hill Friends of the <br />Arts Award <br />- Update on the tolls lawsuit being heard in the Supreme Court of Virginia on <br />September 11, 2013 <br />- Mayor Wright informed citizens of upcoming Back to School Rally at Noble Street <br />Baptist Church, Saturday, August 31, 2013. <br />
