TO URANIUM MINING IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA.
WHEREAS, a private corporation is seeking to lift a legislative moratorium on
mining uranium mining in Virginia so that the corporation may commence mining
uranium at a facility in Pittsylvania County, and
WHEREAS, said location is within the watershed of the New River Valley, which
feeds Lake Gaston, and
WHEREAS, Lake Gaston supplies drinking water to a number of Hampton
Roads localities, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Suffolk, and
could result in contamination of the Lake Gaston water supply, and
WHEREAS, a number of Virginia localities, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk,
Chesapeake, Suffolk, and also the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, have
enacted resolutions in opposition to lifting said moratorium, because of the risk for the
Portsmouth, Virginia:
1. That the City of Portsmouth is hereby officially opposed to lifting the present
moratorium on uranium mining.
