July 24, 2012 <br />12 - 304 -Adoption of a resolution commending Hampton Roads Transit for its <br />support of OpSail 2012. Vision Principle: Quality of Life. <br />Background: <br />• OpSail 2012 brought a large number of visitors to Portsmouth and the Hampton <br />Roads region. The transportation services provided by Hampton Roads Transit for the <br />visitors, and also for residents, were critical to the success of the event. <br />Discussion: <br />• HRT provided bus, light rail, and ferry service for participants and visitors to the <br />event. <br />• Ridership during the event was at record levels. <br />• Bus, light rail, and ferry service were provided smoothly and efficiently. <br />Financial Impact: <br />• No financial impact of adopting this resolution. <br />Recommended Action: <br />• Adoption of the resolution is recommended. Vision Principle: Quality of Life. <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />• Copy of resolution to be sent to Hampton Roads Transit. <br />Motion by Mr. Whitehurst, and seconded by Mr. Heretick, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br />"RESOLUTION COMMENDING HAMPTON ROADS TRANSIT FOR ITS SUPPORT <br />OF OPSAIL 2012. <br />WHEREAS, from June 1-12, 2012, Hampton Roads hosted OpSail 2012, <br />welcoming hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors to enjoy an impressive fleet <br />of tall ships, including navy and military war ships representing the world, and a host of <br />entertainment, cultural, and historical venues and activities throughout the region, and <br />WHEREAS, festivities connecting the downtown waterfronts of Portsmouth and <br />Norfolk included a traditional Parade of Sail, ship tours, spectacular fireworks, concerts <br />and festivals, and educational events and programs, and <br />WHEREAS, safe, efficient and accessible transportation alternatives were an <br />essential element to the success of OpSail 2012 in order to connect people to the <br />places they wanted to travel, and <br />WHEREAS, it is the mission of Hampton Roads Transit to serve the community <br />through high quality, safe, efficient and environmentally friendly regional transportation <br />services, and <br />WHEREAS, Hampton Roads Transit successfully planned and operated transit <br />services on bus, ferry and light rail supporting tourism, travel, economic growth and <br />goodwill to help make OpSail 2012 a great success, and <br />WHEREAS, from June 8-10, 2012, patronage on the ferry services connecting <br />downtown Portsmouth and Norfolk was 32,209 and represents the highest three-day <br />total on record since ferry services began operating as a public transportation service in <br />1983, and <br />WHEREAS, from June 8-10, patronage on the light rail service was 46,756 and <br />represents the highest 3 day total on record since the light rail service began operating <br />in August, 2011. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia that the City of Portsmouth expresses its gratitude and <br />appreciation to Hampton Roads Transit in recognition of its outstanding efforts in <br />helping to make OpSail 2012 a success." <br />
