Vision Principle: Neighborhoods and a Sense of <br />Community. <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />? <br /> Send a copy of the signed resolution to HRPDC for completion of plan. <br />? <br /> Incorporate plan into City of Portsmouth planning. <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Heretick, and seconded by Mr. Edmonds, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />“RESOLUTION APPROVING THE 2011 SOUTHSIDE HAMPTON ROADS REGIONAL <br />HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN TO REDUCE DAMAGES AND SAVE LIVES IN THE <br />EVENT OF A NATURAL DISASTER IN THE REGION. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, <br />in an effort to reduce the Nation’s mounting natural disaster losses, <br />the U. S. Congress passed the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 that requires, in part, that <br />state and local governments develop a hazard mitigation plan in order to remain eligible <br />for pre- and post-disaster mitigation funding; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS <br /> ,such a plan provides a blueprint for helping localities reduce <br />damages and save lives in the event of a natural disaster in the region <br /> <br />WHEREAS <br /> , the 2006 Southside Hampton Roads Regional Hazard Mitigation <br />Plan (“Plan”) was prepared in coordination with the Federal Emergency Management <br />Agency (FEMA) and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, <br />the Plan was the result of a comprehensive planning process <br />undertaken by Isle of Wight County, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, Virginia <br />Beach and Windsor that included regional meetings and public hearings; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> FEMA requires that Hazard Mitigation Plans must be updated and <br />approved by the local government every five years; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> the 2011 Southside Hampton Roads Regional Hazard Mitigation <br />Plan is an updated and enhanced version of the original 2006 Southside Hampton <br /> <br />Roads Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED <br /> by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia that it hereby adopts the 2011 Southside Hampton Roads Regional Hazard <br />Mitigation Plan to reduce damages and to save lives in the event of a natural disaster in <br />the region.” <br /> <br />Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Heretick, Moody, Whitehurst, Wright <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />- New Business - <br /> <br />12 - 65 - Boards and Commissions <br /> <br />Mr. Moody offered the following nominations: <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
