September 27.2011 At a Regular Meeting of the City Council on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, there were present: Mayor Kenneth I. Wright, Vice Mayor Charles B. Whitehurst, Sr., William E. Moody, Jr., Marlene W. Randall, Stephen E. Heretick, Paige D. Cherry, Dr. Curtis E. Edmonds, Sr., City Manager Kenneth L. Chandler, City Attorney G. Timothy Oksman. Reverend Johnnie Drake opened the meeting with prayer, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Mayor Wright called the meeting to order and welcomed all in attendance. Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to approve the minutes of a Called Meeting of September 12, 2011, of a Called Meeting of September 13, 2011, of a Regular Meeting of September 13, 2011, and of a Called Meeting of September 19, and was adopted by the following vote: Ayes: Cherry, Edmonds, Heretick, Moody, Randall, Whitehurst, Wright Nays: None 11 - 403 - Presentations: . Special Presentation by the Portsmouth Museum Foundation. . Presentation of special lapel pins to newly appointed board and commission members. - City Manager's Report - 11 - 404 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $10,550 from the Business Consortium for Arts Support and appropriating said funds in the FY 2011-12 Grants Fund for use by the Department of Museums in support of the 2012 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. Vision Principles: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community, and Lifelong Learning Community. Background: . The Courthouse Galleries has been fortunate to receive a grant from the Business Consortium for Arts Support each year. . The grant will be used to support of the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, which will open in February 2012 and run through October 2012. . The exhibit is held in the courtyard of the Courthouse Galleries and features 8-10 national artists. Discussion: . For the first time the Business Consortium for Arts Support is requesting a $10,550 cash match in order to receive this grant. The funds cannot come from federal, state or local dollars. . The museum will use funds raised through donations from the monthly Concert in the Courtyard Series, proceeds from the sale of art on exhibit, and a donation from the Seawall Art Show to match this grant. Next Steps Following Council Action: . The Department of Museums will send documentation to the Business Consortium for the first portion of the match in September.
