The grant is a on. <br />start-up initiative by the Department of Education for the <br />establishment of jail education programs in accordance with <br />Bill 1331. <br /> <br />Education Grant h. ls <br /> year <br /> <br /> Since many former jail inmates live in the area where <br />were incarcerated, there is a need to help these individuals <br />establish goals that will deter them from criminal activity. <br />Adult Base Education, literacy and GED training have improve~ <br />employab~lity of program participants and providing this ser~ <br />to jail inmates should improve their employment prospects up~ <br />their release. <br /> <br /> Jail inmates with literacy levels ranging from non-read~ <br />through twelfth grade will be served by this program. Areas <br />instruction will include reading, language arts, math scienc~ <br />social studies and writing. GED testing will be provided at <br />three times during this nine month program. <br /> <br /> The total grant award of $9,830 from the ~irginia Depar~ <br />of Education represents 90% of the total program cost. The <br />required cash match of 10%, or $1,092, will be provided thro~ <br />the profits of the Jail's canteen which is'administered by t} <br />Sheriff. ~The total program cost of $10,922 will be allocate( <br />instructional expenses. Th~ Portsmouth Beautification & Clean Community <br />Commission has been very active and successful in promoting ~hes <br />activities in the City, and we look forward~to their continu~ <br />success. <br /> <br /> Together with local contributions, the total funding <br />expected to be available for the 1988-89 Clean Community Program <br />is $8,495.
