A copy of the new amended ordinance will be forwarded to the Commissioner of <br />Revenue of the City of Portsmouth so that he can send bills, commencing in January, <br />2011, to those companies providing telephone services in the City. <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Whitehurst, and seconded by Ms. Randall, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"ORDINANCE TO AMEND CHAPTER 20 OF THE CODE OF THE CITY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA (2006), BY AMENDING SECTION 20-31 PERTAINING TO <br />LICENSE TAXATION ON TELEPHONE COMPANIES." <br /> <br />Ayes: Cherry, Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Whitehurst, Griffin <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />10 - 470 - Adoption of an ordinance accepting a grant in the amount of $43,840 from the <br />Virginia Department of Emergency Management and appropriating said sum in the FY <br />2010- 2011 Grants Fund for support of the City's Emergency Management Program. <br />Vision Principle: Thriving Neighborhoods and a Sense of Community. <br /> <br />Background: <br />. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management recognizes the critical role <br />of emergency management at the local level. Strong local emergency management <br />programs keep the Commonwealth safer, and allow all of us to respond and recover <br />effectively and efficiently when an emergency or disaster occurs. <br />. The grant requires a 1: 1 match ratio and the salary of the Deputy Coordinator of <br />Emergency Management is utilized as the City's contribution. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />. Emergency Management equipment, supplies, and training are funded by this <br />program. This funding is essential in supporting the mission of protecting Portsmouth <br />citizens from natural and man-made disasters. <br /> <br />Financial Impact: <br />. In-kind match (Salary of Deputy Coordinator of Emergency Management). <br /> <br />Staff Recommends: <br />. Adoption of a proposed ordinance.
