F~bruary 14, 1989 <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the General Assembly of Virginia <br />be, and hereby is, requested to include the City of Portsmouth as <br />a jurisdiction which would be authorized to implement such local <br />tax. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Cteri~ be, and is hereby <br />is, directed to forward a copy of this resolutiOn to the Members <br />of the Portsmouth Delegation to the General Assembly of Virginia. <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray¥ Hawks, Lucas, Simpson, Webb <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> 89,69 MotiOn of Mr. Barnes and seconded by ~Mr. Hawks, the <br />following resolution on a local option g~S tax wa~ adopSed On the <br />first and final reading, and by th~ following vote: <br /> <br /> "A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THATi THE CITY OF PORTSMOUTH BE ADDE£ <br />TO SENATE BILL NO. 809 TO ALLOW THE CITY TO CHARGE A LOCAL OPTION <br />GAS TAX. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council hasi identified for several years <br />the need for additional local revenues; and <br /> <br /> %'~EREAS, this gas tax is to be used for transportation <br />improvements; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 809 has passed the Senate and would <br />allow Northern Virginia localitiesi to charge a local option gas <br />tax up to five cents ($0.05) per gallon. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth that the General Assembly be, and it hereby is, <br />requested to add Portsmouth to thel localities which may impose a <br />local option gas tax up to 5% (five percent); and <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this authority also be granted <br />other Hampton Roads localities." <br /> <br />Ayes: <br />Nays: <br /> <br />Barnes, Corprew, Gray~ Hawks, Lucas, Simpson, Webb <br />NOne <br /> <br /> Mr. Corprew commented on the train problem at the crossings <br />on Portsmouth Boulevard and Frederick Boulevard and referred the <br />matter to the City Manager. <br /> <br /> 89-70 George M. Rose, 6407 Portsmouth Boulevard, <br />representing himself, spoke concerDing the city schools. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mr. Barnes, to have the <br />City Manager refer Mr. Rose's concerns to the School Board for <br />answering, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br /> 89-71 Queen B. Stephenson, 2111 Piedmont Avenue, <br />representing the Brighton/Prentis Park Civic League, spoke <br />concerning a drug problem with a grocery store on Piedmont Avenue <br />in their neighborhood. <br /> <br /> Mr. Corprew requested that the City Attorney look into <br />whether an ABC License is transferable from one establishment to <br />another. <br /> <br /> <br />
