~un~27, 1989 <br /> <br />495 <br /> <br /> At a regular meeting of the City Council held on Tuesday, <br />June 27, 1989, there were present: <br /> <br />Mayor Gloria O. Webb, Uice Mayor J. Robert Gray, Jack P. <br />Barnes, E. G. Corprew, Jr., James C. Hawks, J. Herbert <br />Simpson, George L. Hanbury, II, City Manager, Steven <br />Lieberman, City Attorney. <br /> <br /> Reverend Allen R. McFarland, Pastor, Calvary Evangelical <br />Baptist Church, opened the meeting with prayer, followed by the <br />Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. <br /> <br />Mayor Webb welcomed all visitors in attendance. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Simpson and seconded by Mr. Gray, minutes of a <br />called meeting of June 12, 1989; minutes of the Public Hearing of <br />June 12, 1989; minutes of a called meeting of June 13, 1989; and <br />minutes of a regular meeting of June 13, 1989, to be approved as <br />received, and was adopted by unanimous vote. <br /> <br />89-256 <br /> <br /> Mr. <br />Southern <br />rentals. <br /> <br />Public Hearing on proposed amendment to Section 20-81 <br />the City Code, 1988, pertaining to business licenses, <br />and to amend Chapter 35, Code of the City of Portsmouth~ <br />19~8, to add Article XIV pertaining to the establishmen~ <br />of a tax on short term rentals. <br /> <br />Richard A. Shiflett, 1331 Hodges Ferry Road, representin¢ <br />Rental, spoke in opposition of the 1% tax on short term <br /> <br />No action taken. <br /> <br />UNFINISHED BUSINESS <br /> <br />CONSENT AGENDA <br /> <br /> Mayor Webb requested that item 89-236 (c) be removed from th. <br />Consent Agenda. <br /> <br /> Councilman Hawks requested that item 89-242 be removed from <br />the Consent Agenda. <br /> <br /> On motion of Mr. Gray and seconded by Mr. Barnes, the <br />following items approved on first reading at the regular meeting <br />of June 13, 1989, were adopted on final reading and by the <br />following vote: <br /> <br /> 89-240 "AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $200,000. FROM THE <br />CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND FOR'THE ACQUISITION AND INSTALLATION OF <br />THE E-911 EMERGENCY TELEPHONE SYSTEM." <br /> <br /> 89-243 "AN ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $30~000. FROM THE <br />CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND FOR THE ACQUISITION AND INSTALLATION OF <br />NEW TRAFFIC SIGNAL AT THE INTERSECTION OF VICTORY BOULEVARD, ELM <br />AVENUE AND WILLIAMS AVENUE." <br /> <br />Ayes: Barnes, Corprew, Gray, Hawks, Simpson, Webb <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> <br />
