I, t~e~efore, su~bmit the resolution for your consideration and approval." ~he following citizens spoke in opposition to~'the resolution in support of Smithfield Foods ~ahd its importance, to the economy of Virginia: ~ John F. Bailey, Jr., 203 Dixie Avenue, representing the Federation of Civic Clubs; G. M. Rose, 6407 Portsmouth Boulevard, representin~ the Hedges Manor Civic League; and Ri~ha'rd Moore, 410 Park Manor~Road, representing the Park Manor ¢ivic~ Club. .~ The Mayor explained to those present that the Council's intentions were to request the Commonwealth of Virginia to review the situation ,a~d all reasonable alternatives .to protect both Smithfield,goods-and the environment. Motion of Mr. Simpson and seconded by Mr. Barnes, the following resolution was adopted on first and final reading, and by the following vote: "A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SMITHFIELD FOODS AND ITS IMPORTANCE TO THE ECONOMY OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA. WHEREAS, Smithfield Foods is one of Portsmouth's corporate citizens and has an economic impact on this community; and
