<br /> , ~REAS, the U.S.S~ Coral sea was named inicomme~ ration of
<br /> thelb le of Coral Sea, which was fought in Ma~ of t9~2, the
<br /> first 3or engagement in Na[al history where opposing ships did
<br /> notlex ange a single shot, oecause Naval A~ia~[on had become the
<br /> maih f ~of armament~ and which battle was the turnin¢ point in
<br />thelwa ~ith Japan; ~and
<br /> I! K- REAS, the u.s.s~ Coral 'Sea was constructed at ~ewport
<br /> New~, rginia, and after commissioning in Octo ,er of i]947, was
<br /> fitted ut at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, irginia;

<br /> I ~ ~EAs in the ensuing year~s, the ~U.S.S. ~oral <Sea has been
<br /> modern ~d and has made namerous deployments in61uding five combai
<br /> deployments In support of operations against Noyth Vietnam and ~tw¢
<br /> aro~nd~he world cruiSes; and

<br /> REAS, the U.S,Si coral Sea ~has lived 'up!~o its motto "The
<br /> Besh In'The World" earning three Battle "E" Awards as the top
<br /> car~ier~in the Pacific Fleet and two Flatley Awards as the safest
<br /> car{~e ~n the United States Navy and served ~wl~n distinction in
<br /> the~Ma ~uez~ incident; and
<br />
<br /> I K REAS, in September of 1983, the U.S.S, ~oral Sea returned
<br /> to the lace of her birth'to commence a complex overka~l and
<br /> modern ~tion desig'ned t'o~ake ,Tbs!Ageless Warrior" a viable and
<br /> potent ar fighter, and in the-words of John Le~man, 't~e~
<br /> of~he ~vy, "to command the respect of friend~and foe as she~
<br /> her distinguished~career;" and
<br />
<br /> , the Department of Navy Will decomaission the U.S.S.
<br /> Cor. on April 30, 1990.
<br /> I THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by ~he C~un~il of he City of
