<br /> Myleka Graves, Kenneth Suddeth, Joel Armistead, Ted Burch
<br />and Keesha Littles, 2 year-old pre-school students from the DAC
<br />Center opened the meeting with a song of prayer, followed by the
<br />Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
<br />
<br /> Mayor Webb welcomed all visitors in attendance.
<br />
<br /> Motion'of Mr;;;!Gray and seconded by Mr. Barnes, minutes of
<br />a called meeting of April 9, 1990; minutes of a Public Hearing
<br />of April 9, 1990; minutes of a called meeting of April 10, 1990;
<br />minutes of a regular meeting of April 10, 1990; and minutes of a
<br />special cat~ed ~eeting ef April ~17, 1990 to ~be app~ove~as ~
<br />received, and was adopted by unanimous vote.

<br />(a) A resolution recognizing Dr. John Anderson Jackson,
<br /> Sr. (retired) and his achievements and contributions
<br /> to his community was presented to Dr. Jackson.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Corprew and seconded by Mr. Simpson, the
<br />following resolution was adopted, and by the following vote:
<br />
<br /> "A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF JOHN
<br />ANDERSON JACKSON, SR., M.D. (RETIRED).
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr.'John Anderson Jackson, Sr., who was born on
<br />July 2, 1902, educated in the Portsmouth Public Schools,
<br />graduated from Virginia Union University with a Bachelor of
<br />Science Degree in Education, and graduated from Meharry Medical
<br />College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1928, has been a life long
<br />resident of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has been very active in community
<br />activities and in medical activities in this community, having
<br />formerly served on the staffs of Norfolk Community Hospital and
<br />Portsmouth General Hospital, and having held active memberships
<br />in the Portsmouth Medical Society, the Old Dominion Medical
<br />Society, the National Medical Society, the Norfolk County
<br />Medical Society, the Virginia Medical Society, and the Norfolk
<br />Medical Society; and was formerly a member of the Advisory Board
<br />of the Portsmouth Housing Commission; and formerly a member of
<br />the Board of Patrick Henry Hospital; and a co-organizer and
<br />sponsor of the Swans Athletic Association (1947-1950); and a
<br />member of Zion Baptist Church. John Anderson Jackson, Sr.
<br />married the former Carolyn Worrell, and they are the parents of
<br />One son, Dr. John A. Jackson, Jr.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS,
<br />his exemplary
<br />recognized.
<br />
<br />the stature he has attained in this community by
<br />life and monumental achievements are well
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
<br />of Portsmouth, Virginia, that this resolution is spread upon the
<br />minutes of the Council and that a copy thereof be presented to
<br />John Anderson Jackson, Sr., M.D. (Retired) in recognition of his
<br />service and respected stature in this community."
