<br />July 14. 2009 <br /> <br />2. Mark Geduldig-Yatrofsky, 2713 Sterling Point Drive, spoke in opposition to this <br />item. <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, IN <br />SUPPORT OF THE "HONOR AND REMEMBER" FLAG AS AN OFFICIAL SYMBOL <br />TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES WHO HAVE <br />DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO <br />ADOPT THIS FLAG AS A NATIONAL SYMBOL. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, since the Revolutionary War, more than one million members of the <br />United States Armed Forces have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty to preserve our <br />freedom; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there is no greater love than one who would lay down his life for his <br />fellow man; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of those fallen members of our Armed <br />Forces are deserving of national recognition; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, at the present time, there is no officially recognized symbol to <br />acknowledge and honor members of our Armed Forces who have died in the line of <br />duty; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Congressman Randy Forbes has introduced House of <br />Representatives Bill 1034, which proposes to amend Chapter 9 of Title 36 of the United <br />States Code to designate the "Honor and Remember" Flag created by Honor and <br />Remember, Inc., as an official symbol to recognize and honor members of our Armed <br />Forces who have died in the line of duty; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the "Honor and Remember" Flag will serve as a symbol of national <br />gratitude for all those members of the Armed Forces who have given their lives for our <br />freedom; will serve as a daily reminder for all Americans to acknowledge the ultimate <br />price of freedom; and will give comfort to the families who have lost loved ones during <br />military service; and <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that it supports legislation to establish a national flag to honor and <br />remember those who have given their lives in military service for our great nation. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the United States Congress is urged to adopt <br />House of Representatives Bill 1034 to select the "Honor and Remember" Flag which <br />has been created by Honor and Remember, Inc. to serve as a national symbol. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to <br />Portsmouth's representatives in the United States Senate and House of <br />Representatives. " <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />09 - 368 - Adoption of a resolution authorizing the conveyance of certain property <br />interests needed for construction of a new bridge that will replace the Jordan Bridge. <br />Vision Principles: Bold New Directions, A Robust and Prospering Economy, and Pride <br />of the Past, Promise of the Future. <br />
