It is further recommended by the Director of General Operations that the cont~ract be awarded to Nash Construction Company of Richmond, Virginia. Ayes: Clemons, Corprew, Epperson, King, Hawks, Nays: None Lucas, Webb REPORTS FROM THE CITY MANAQER - 91-314 Letter from the city Manager recommending adoption of a resolution supporting the request of-Commonwealth Railway, Inc. for state financial assistance for track rehabilitation and grade crossing improvements within the City of Portsmouth. The State'has ~eated a Shortli~ne Raitroad~Fina~cial Assistance Program to assist in funding track improvements. Commonwealth Railway, Inc., which operates a shorttiHe raitroad 'b~t~een SuffOlk and West Norfolk area of Portsmouth, is seeking financial assistance "from this program. Approval of this item fulfills ~ne of~the applic~tioh requirements for a resolution from the local governing b~dy.supporti~g the funding request. "I have received a request from Commonwealth Railway, Inc., which operates a shortline railroad between Suffolk and the West Norfo~lk Area of Portsmouth. !The Railroad is' seeking State financial assistance for track improvements and for grade crossing improvement~ within the~City limits.of Portsmouth. Under legislation adopted by the Virginia General Assembly, such assistance is available if accompanied by a resolution from the local body requesting that such funds be allocated. These improvements would be useful hot only to the railroad but to the citizens, si~c:e agrade crossing would be upgraded and a drainage ditch would be improved.
