<br /> At the regular meeting of the City Council held on Tuesday,
<br />February 11, 1992, there were present:
<br />
<br /> Mayor Gloria O. Webb, Vice Mayor E. G. Corprew, Jr., Johnny
<br />M. Clemons, Joh~ H. Epperson, Lee E. King, James C. Hawks, Junius
<br />H. Williams, Jr., V. Wayne Orton, City Manager, Stuart E. Katz,

<br /> Tracey Whitehead opened the meeting with prayer, fallowed by
<br />the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
<br />
<br />Mayor wetcom~d all visitors' in attendance.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Epperson, and seconded by Mr. King, minutes of
<br />a Called Meeting of January 21, 1992; minutes of a Called Meeting
<br />of January 22, 1992; minutes of a Regular Meeting of January 28,
<br />1992; minutes of Special Called Meeting of February 8, 1992; to be
<br />approved as received, and was adopted by unanimous vote.
<br />
<br />92-45 Resolution recognizing the accomplishments of Lieutenant
<br />General Alonzo Earl Short, Jr., United States Army.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Hawks and seconded by Mr. King, the following
<br />resolution was adopted, and by the following vote:
<br />
<br /> "A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF LIEUTENANT
<br />GENERAL ALONZO EARL SHORT, JR., UNITED STATES ARMY.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Lieutenant General Alonzo Earl Short, Jr., who was
<br />born on January 27, 1939, educated in The Portsmouth Public
<br />Schools, graduated from Virginia State College with a Bachelor of
<br />Science Degree in Industrial Arts, and graduated from New York
<br />Institute of Technology with a Masters Degree in Business
<br />Administration has brought honor to himself, his family and his
<br />hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia by honorably serving our country
<br />as a member of the Un~ited States Army for thirty years; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, though he presently serves as Commanding General for
<br />the United States Army Information Systems, which is a sprawling
<br />telecommunications network that connects Army bases in fifteen
<br />countries worldwide, General Short ~ttributes the encouragement he
<br />received from Norcom coach Walter "Doc" Hurley as having helped
<br />him excel in college and in the Army; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, General Short's command is the largest military
<br />telecommunication system in the world and was utilized as the
<br />communication backbone of Operation Desert Storm, keeping soldiers
<br />in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in constant touch with allied
<br />commanders and processed tens of thousands of messages each day
<br />and prompted Generals Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkop£ to state
<br />that this communication system was invaluable to our allied
<br />success; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, the stature that General Short has attained in this
<br />community and in the military community by his exemplary life and
<br />monumental achievements are well recognized.
<br />
<br /> NOW, TREREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of
<br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that this resolution be spread upon the
<br />minutes of the Council and that a copy thereof be presented to
<br />Lieutenant General Alonzo Earl Short, Jr. in recognition of his
<br />service and respected stature in this community.
