June 13, 2006

Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley
Nays: None

06 - 261 - Adoption of an ordinance to accept the grant award of $27,000 from the
Business Consortium for the Arts, and to appropriate that same amount for exhibits and
programming at the Courthouse Galleries. Vision Principle: Lifelong Learning
Community.

Background:
. The Courthouse Galleries has been fortunate to receive the Business
Consortium for the Arts Support Grant for a number of years.
. With this grant, the Courthouse Galleries will be able to develop and continue
offering quality exhibits and programs for the citizens of the City of Portsmouth,
Hampton Roads communities and beyond.

Discussion:
. The Courthouse Galleries is a non-collecting museum that is devoted to offering
quality educational, cultural and aesthetic experiences in the arts and humanities
through rotating exhibits, lectures, classes and performances. The Courthouse
Galleries puts on a minimum of 8 exhibits per year and this would not be possible
without the funds from this grant.
. Financial Impact: There is no local cash match required for this grant.

Staff Recommends:
Adoption of an Ordinance to accept the grant award of $27,000 from the Business
Consortium for the Arts, and to appropriate that same amount for exhibits and
programming at the Courthouse Galleries. Vision Principle: Lifelong Learning
Community.

Next Steps Following Council Action:
. Confirm the exhibit schedule,
. Route contracts,
. Develop programs that compliment the exhibit, and
. Confirm a marketing/public relations strategy.

Motion by Ms. Randall, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to adopt the following
ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote:

"ORDINANCE ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF $27,000 FROM THE
BUSINESS CONSORTIUM FOR THE ARTS AND APPROPRIATING SAID SUM IN
THE FY 2005-2006 GRANTS FUND FOR USE BY THE DEPARTMENT OF
MUSEUMS FOR EXHIBITS AND PROGRAMMING AT THE COURTHOUSE
GALLERI ES."

Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Smith, Whitehurst, Holley
Nays: None

06 - 262 - Adoption of an ordinance to appropriate additional State funding in the
amount of $250 from the Library of Virginia to the Portsmouth Public Library for
Governor Kaine's Smart Beginnings Blitz. Vision Principle: Lifelong Learning
Community.
