AUQust 23. 2005

- City Manager's Report -

05 - 385 - Adoption of an ordinance to accept a grant award in the amount of $43,336
from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Office of Emergency Medical Services, and to
appropriate a total of $92,000 for the purchase of a new ambulance for the Department
of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. Vision Principle: Neighborhood and
Community Transformation.

Background:
. The City's Fleet Manager maintains a regular replacement schedule for the
ambulance fleet.
. Currently, the City maintains five frontline ambulance units with three units in a
reserve fleet.
. The City's oldest ambulance is a 1999 Type I Ambulance with 107,846 miles,
and is in the reserve fleet. This ambulance will be removed entirely from service.
. The new ambulance will replace the oldest of the five frontline units (a 2000 Type
I Ambulance with 97,540 miles), which will be relegated to the reserve fleet.
. The new unit will serve from Station 10 (Victory Boulevard) as Medic 10.

Discussion:
. The City's Emergency Medical Services Division of the Department of Fire,
Rescue and Emergency Services has requested that the new unit be identical to Medic
12, with a larger patient compartment.
. Financial Impact: There is a 53% cash match of $48,664 required by the City for
this grant. The cash match has been budgeted by the Department of General Services
- Vehicle Services Division under the fleet management plan for vehicle replacement.

Staff Recommends:
Adoption of an Ordinance to accept a grant award in the amount of $43,336 from the
Commonwealth of Virginia, Office of Emergency Medical Services, and to appropriate a
total of $92,000 for the purchase of a new ambulance for the Department of Fire,
Rescue and Emergency Services. Vision Principle: Neighborhood and Community
Transformation.

Next Steps Following Council Action:
.
