<br />May 24.2005 <br /> <br />Motion by Mr. Moody, and seconded by Mr. Heretick, to adopt the following <br />ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br />"AN ORDINANCE APPROPRIATING $160,000 IN THE FY 2004-2005 OPERATING <br />BUDGET GRANTS FUND IN RECOVERED COST REVENUE FROM THE STATE <br />COMPENSATION BOARD TO FUND ADDITIONAL OPERATING COSTS AND AN <br />ACTUARIAL STUDY BY THE VIRGINIA RETIREMENT SYSTEM FOR THE <br />SHERIFF'S OFFICE." <br /> <br />Ayes: Heretick, Moody, Psi mas, Randall, Whitehurst, Holley <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />05 - 242 - Adoption of an ordinance to accept $198,050 from the Virginia Department <br />of Fire Programs and to appropriate the same amount for the Portsmouth Department <br />of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services for the purchase of equipment, supplies, <br />training and entitlement funds for fire protection services. Vision Principle: <br />Neighborhood and Community Transformation. <br /> <br />Background: <br />. The Fire Programs Fund is an entitlement of funds awarded to the <br />Commonwealth of Virginia from the 2005 Assistance to Firefighters Act. <br />. The Fire Program funds shall be used solely for the purposes of training <br />firefighting personnel; funding fire prevention and public safety education programs; <br />constructing, improving and expanding regional or local fire service training facilities; <br />purchasing emergency medical care and equipment for fire personnel; payment of <br />personnel cost related to fire and medical training for the fire personnel; or for <br />purchasing personal protective equipment, vehicles, equipment and supplies for use in <br />the receiving locality specifically for fire service purposes. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />. The funds provided will be used in accordance with the Code of Virginia 38.2-401. <br />Fire Programs Fund. <br />. Without these funds, the City would have to provide funding from the City's <br />Operating Budget. <br />. This item will contribute to City Council's vision principles of Bold New Directions, <br />Neighborhood and Community Transformation, Life Long Learning Community and a <br />Robust and Prospering Community. <br />. Financial Impact: There is no local match required. <br /> <br />Recommended Action: Adoption of an ordinance to accept $198,050 from the Virginia <br />Department of Fire Programs and to appropriate the same amount for the Portsmouth <br />Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services for the purchase of equipment, <br />supplies, training, and to improve training facilities. <br /> <br />Next Steps Following Council Action: <br />.
