Februar~ 24, 2004 <br /> <br />- New Business - <br /> <br />04 - 83 - Boards and Commissions <br /> <br />Mr. Benn offered the following nomination: <br /> <br />PORTSMOUTH COMMUNITY POLICY AND MANAGEMENT TEAM <br /> <br />Reynold W. Jordan to be appointed to fill a term with no expiration date, replacing <br />Bertha J. Wright. <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Benn, and seconded by Mr. Moody, to close the nomination, and <br />there being no further nomination, the above nomination was adopted by unanimous <br />vote. <br /> <br />04 - 84 - Items Submitted by Council Members <br /> <br />Councilman Whitehurst announced there would be a bus trip to Richmond, Virginia <br />to lobby and visit with the Delegates and Senators in the 2004 General Assembly. <br />The bus will depart at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2004. <br /> <br />Councilwoman Randall spoke on the annual observance of the Buffalo Riders in <br />recognition of the Buffalo Soldiers who served in the U. S. 9th and 10th Calvary. The <br />observance was held Saturday, February 21, 2004. <br /> <br />Councilman Benn appealed to citizens to contact the Office of the City Clerk to get <br />an application to serve on Boards and Commissions. <br /> <br />Councilman Moody spoke on Missy Elliott winning at the Grammys and being a <br />Portsmouth Notable. <br /> <br />Councilwoman Randall spoke on a Super Bowl XXXVIII player from the City of <br />Portsmouth being recognized as a Portsmouth Notable. <br /> <br />Vice Mayor Griffin spoke on the Parks and Recreation annual program at the <br />Neighborhood Facility and thanked the staff for an outstanding job. <br /> <br />Councilman Moody announced the State of the City Address to be held at the <br />Holiday Inn, 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2004. <br /> <br />03 - 85 - Non-Agenda Speakers <br /> <br />1. Carrey Canty, 4003 Merryfield Boulevard, spoke on a problem with a tree removal <br /> contractor. <br /> <br />2. J. Brewer Moore, 308 Bobby Jones Drive, spoke on retiring from the City of <br /> Portsmouth. <br /> <br />3. Stephen A. Whitehead, 4419 County Street, spoke on Police Department <br /> procedures in a burglary to his property in Cradock. <br /> <br />4. William E. Copeland, 2107 Staunton Avenue, requested the City to take <br /> environmental precautions before building new developments. <br /> <br />Amos Berkovich, 5241 Balfor Drive, Virginia Beach, spoke on a resolution by PRHA <br />for an International House of Pancakes at the corner of Effingham Street and County <br />Street. <br /> <br />6. Genevieve LaFargue, 475 Water Street, presented an autographed copy of Black <br /> American Series, Portsmouth, Virginia, to the Portsmouth Public Library. <br /> <br />7. Carlton M. Carrington, 3 Jamal Court, spoke on SALT (Seniors and Law <br /> Enforcement Together) and the TRIAD program. <br /> <br /> <br />
