Recommendation: · Adoption of an ordinance to appropriate $94,924 in the Grants Fund for the purchase of fire safety equipment, physical fitness equipment, and for fitness training programs for Fire and EMS personnel. Purpose and Need: · The purpose of the grant funds is to implement a wellness/fitness program for the 239 operational (Fire and EMS) department members. · In addition to improving the health and fitness of department members, secondary benefits include reduced severity of unavoidable injuries, improved aerobic capacities, and lifestyle changes. Financial Impact: · The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded the Fire Department $94,924 from the FY 03 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. · Federal funding from FEMA is 70% ($66,447) and City funding is 30% ($28,477). Motion by Mr. Pitts, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to adopt the following ordinance, and was adopted by the following vote: "ORDINANCE TO APPROPRIATE $94,924 IN THE GRANTS FUND FOR FIRE EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMS." Ayes: Benn, Griffin, Moody, Pitts, Randall, Whitehurst, Holley Nays: None 04 - 81 - Adoption of a resolution to name the Neighborhood Facility Playground located on Elm Avenue in honor of Mrs. Ruth Freeman-Hendricks. 04 - 82 - Adoption of a resolution to rename the Neighborhood Facility located on Elm Avenue in honor of Mr. Thomas E. "Jeff" Norman. Motion by Mr. Griffin, and seconded by Mr. Whitehurst, to refer 04-81 and 04-82 back to the Parks and Recreation Commission, and was adopted by unanimous vote.
