Pebruary 112 1908. <br /> <br /> the Pir~nee Committee can report definitely as to an appropriation for the house. <br /> <br /> To hold a joint session for reconsiderir~ that part of the proposed charter adopted at the late <br />join~ sesssiorb by which a m~jority of the total membership of the Police Board may dismiss a man <br />from the police force wi+~hout charges being preferred agminst him. - Not concurred in. <br /> <br /> Second. Matters adopted by the Board of Aldermen January 21st and referred to the Co~mon Coon- <br />eil for coneumrence. <br /> <br /> To appoint a co~mr~ttee to inquire into the propriety of the 0ity Attorney acting as attorney for <br />~shier of the late People§' Ban!<. Not concurred in. <br /> <br />Third. Communications from the M~yor. <br /> <br /> The M~yor returned his approval to a resolution adopted by the two branches January l~th and <br />21st authorizing the T~easurer to make notes in the. several City banks to amount of $15,000, to meet <br />co, rent expenses for month of Pebruary~ 1908. <br /> <br /> He sent in also his "message" For the year of 1907: and, after it had been read by the Clerk, <br /> the following recommendations contained therein were referred to their ~ppropriate eon~ittees: <br /> <br /> To-reduce the tax on market stalls mhd increase the same on grocery stores selling meats and <br /> vegetables. <br /> To provide safes for City Hall officers in case m Clerk's office is not to be built in the near <br />Future. <br /> To tax bill boards, and to lay a more equitable tax on merchants. <br /> That a department be not permitted to expend monthly more than one-twelfth of its at, ual appro- <br />priation, plus ar~unexpended balance for the preceding month, without consent of the Council therefor. <br /> To take up the question of franchise for supplying the City with lights. <br /> To direct the Southern States Teieohcne Compar~ to instmll the'same kinds of instruments and <br />switehbomrds in this City as they are u~ing in Norfolk. <br /> To require telephone companies to ~r~usmit messages to mnd from each other, and that charges <br />for same shall not exceed charges at pay stations of the comps~y transmitting the message. <br /> To consider: the mdvisability of creating a Committee on Accounts and Supplies. <br /> <br /> On motion, the Joint Pin,nee Committee was instructed to provide for printing the "message." <br /> Pourth. ~he regular reports of Officers and other ur~inished business. <br /> <br /> The reports of Officers For month of J~nu~ry were presented and were ordered to take the usual <br /> <br />course. <br /> <br />The foll0w~ng additional report v~s made by the Commissioner of the Revenue: <br /> <br /> "January i~, 1908. <br /> <br /> "To the Presidents and members of the City Council. <br /> <br /> "~entlemen: <br /> "In conjunction with my report <br />submitted in October: 1907: I have the honor to submit the following supplementary report: the same <br />being on Real Estate and Berson~l Property assessed by the Corporation Commission. <br /> <br />"Real Estate, $731:720.00 <br />Tang.
